The chief and people of the Likpe Koforidua in the Hohoe Municipality have held a fund raising durbar of their new settlement. In addition their Junior High School block project was completed.

The chief of Likpe Koforidua, Nana Kweku Samba has called on the government to support schools in deprived areas of the region. He said government should also extend the school feeding programme and other programmes which would motivate students in school.

The Likpe’s are called the Bakpele which was corrupted from the word “Bakple” which means “the bigger groups”, however they were nick-named Likpe by the Gbi spies who saw the sharpening stones in readiness for war against the Gbis.

The Bakpele came about the name Likpe Koforidua when they left Likpe Avedzeme where they were insulted by strangers who use the road through the town without saying hello to them.

When confronted, they were greeted with unsavory remarks like “we do not see human beings around, for the real humans have left the town”. Immediately a meeting was conveyed by some elders and they have agreed to search for a new settlement.

They were later on eluded with fruitless journey, they finally rest at a place and responded “Okwan Nforo Dua”, an Akan proverb which literally means “a road does not climb a tree” which is presently called Likpe Koforidua.

This year’s celebration is geared towards the image building of the Junior High School building in the area to serve as motivating factor for students to have access to quality education in the area.

Nana Samba disclosed that a six-unit classroom block and an office for the primary were constructed through a voluntary contribution of citizens.

He said the new block is without furniture for the staff and school pupils and are forced to carry kitchen stools and tables to school.

He therefore called on the Assembly to help address this problem. Nana Samba also called on the government to rehabilitate the road network in the area for the people to have access to market and health facilities.
